Here's an excerpt from Ed Biado's "The industry has two faces" | Posted on Dec. 31, 2012
"Why would they pay P180 to see a film that will only make them feel worse? We are an escapist society—moviegoers want to forget about their problems, if only for 95 minutes, and immerse themselves in fantastical and magical worlds where all’s well that ends well.
This is why the Panday, Enteng and Tanging Ina franchises work. This is why The Unkabogable Praybeyt Benjamin is the highest-grossing Filipino film of all time. This is why Thy Womb, as culturally- and socially-relevant and finely-crafted as it is, is dead in these domestic waters.
Major studios will only finance the development of concepts that have the potential to make a profit. They will not invest in thought-provoking and complicated movies that they know the public will not watch, no matter how many accolades and standing ovations these masterpieces can potentially reap at international film festivals. Prestige is not—and, in these economic times, will never be—enough."
Am sharing this info for everyone to realize that what we have chosen/payin' (film that we watched) were worth-it.
